3D printed aneurysm model shortlisted for TCT Healthcare Application Awards 2019

News

A 3D printed model created by Axial3D and used in a recent brain aneurysm surgery case has been shortlisted at the TCT Healthcare Application Awards 2019.

The clinical team at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare (TMH) requested a personalized 3D printed model to be created from a patient’s scans. The 3D printed model was used to plan the procedure and support patient education and consent. Following the operation, the patient’s risk of stroke is now almost zero. With so many innovative and life-saving applications of 3D printing happening every day, it’s rewarding to have our work in neurosurgery shortlisted for the TCT Healthcare Application Awards 2019.

An estimated 6 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm.

Every 18 minutes, a brain aneurysm ruptures, resulting in a fatality in about 40% of cases. Of those who survive, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit.

By 3D printing the patient’s skull, Dr. Lawson was able to exactly plan the procedure to reduce his patient’s chance of stroke from very high to almost zero. Complex cases like this can be augmented with the help of 3D printed models, which enhance the surgeon's knowledge ahead of stepping foot in the operating room.

“For surgeons, these 3D replicas are helpful in seeing the exact curvature of blood vessels, their proximity to other brain structures, and importantly, to explain clearly to patients what is involved.”

- Matthew Lawson, MD, Neurosurgeon - Stroke Medical Director at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.
